ONE DAY EARLY??? What?

My exact sentiments - initially.

But this year, with Christmas falling on Sunday, it worked out best for us celebrate everything 1 day early,

AND it was super awesome not having to wait 1 - more - day:)

Without further ado:

(yes, she really did slip right off the back of her seat and land right on her backside. She also tipped over at least twice - she went flying down our driveway, not really knowing how to stop or slow down to make a 90* turn:( What a brave girl to get right back up on her bike and try again!!!

Once again, we enjoyed a variety of music performed by students, my student's student and even some piano students (not mine) -

piano solos, violin solos, and a violin duet.

Continuing the theme of "firsts" for Asher:

. he rolled from belly to back and was soooooo proud of himself

. he has become a Bona fide thumb sucker

. he tried out both the exersaucer and the johnny jumper and appears to enjoy them

. he celebrated his 1st Christmas

. he seems to respond to the question, "Do you want to eat?" by wiggling, complaining, and licking his lips

Each day his personality becomes more defined:

He definitely has a preference and is quick to let you know.

He is a finicky eater and will only eat when he is truly hungry, preferring no distractions and

a steady flow of milk vs. "let down." He is a very happy, busy baby, constantly jabbering or in motion. Even while nursing, he is kicking his legs, pushing with his feet; his little hand in front is either smacking me or pawing at me like a kitten, and his hand under my arm is most often scratching the pillow case.

He LOVES to be entertained (especially by Luke).

Mommy and her "babies".

This was the present that Luke had me wrap up for Asher (his car from Steak and Shake).

Lacking patience, Luke helped Asher open it a few days early,

and I think Asher quite enjoyed playing with it for a little while.

Each morning, the 1st words out of Luke's mouth are usually, "Mommy, can I hold Asher. Plllleeaase!!!"Luke is becoming quite skilled at toting his baby brother around. He can now pick him up off the floor/ set him back down, walk around the house with him, undress him (when Mommy asks;), and sit holding him - Asher rarely cries anymore.

Not content sitting back.

This boy wants to sit up so badly.

After 4-5 weeks of sleep regression (only sleeping at night if he was in my arms or nursing), this boy now SLEEPS all night and even naps in his crib (yes, he graduated from his bassinet or swing to the crib). For the last couple of weeks, he averages 9-10 hours between feeds at night.

What a big boy!!! We are so proud of you!

Based on this series of pics, one might almost think that Asher slept his way through November;) He didn't, but at least I was able to set him down for a short nap in the swing .

His "firsts" for this month include:

. rolling over from belly to back

. his thrush is GONE

. 9 1/2 hours between feeds (this one was short-lived)

Soundly asleep (for a few minutes at least;) on his belly in the bassinet.

Working on his upper body strength.

He has faithfully and industriously been working on this for the past few months.

This has been no easy task for him, but he did not give up.

His reward - he is so proud of himself AND he got a specialty M&M shake at Steak and Shake.

Now this is something he is VERY good at... building/putting together pretty much anything.

The Pumpkin Patch

This year only Aidan, Luke, and myself visited the pumpkin patch.

The older boys considered themselves to be too old for this activity which worked out perfectly anyways - they kept Asher at home allowing him to get a proper nap:)

At this particular place, they also have quite a few animals -

chickens, geese, ducks, huge catfish, cats,

a baby donkey whom a sweet big brother helped his little brother to pet,

and piglets.

4 Handsome men

A few weeks ago, our boys chose to attend an open casting call for major roles in an upcoming family film! They were told that no experience was necessary (good thing;) and to bring a non-returnable photo.The process included some paperwork and a professional photograph.

This was followed by an interview and pretend scenarios being acted out while being filmed.

Regardless of the outcome, I am glad they had this opportunity.

They were super nervous at first, but ended up having a blast acting both separately and then together.

They pretended to play a soccer game (with no ball) and to help their little brother climb a tree (no little brother present).

What a great experience!!!

On a quest to get rid of the yeastie beasties.

To date we have tried:

.3 wk. of nystatin

. 3 days of gentian violet

. 10 days for Asher and 2 wks for me of Fluconazole/Diflucan

. 5 days of gentian violet

. and currently, he has been back on nystatin for a week.

It is not gone, but it is definitely improving.

Meanwhile, he is also taking a hypoallergenic pro/prebiotic 1-2x per day.

Prayers that the thrush will once and for all be eradicated.

This is probably the one and only pic we will have of him sleeping in the bouncy seat,

because he really does not seem to like it.

He really does LOVE his swing,

although one might think otherwise based on his expression.

And he likes it best with either the vacuum running

or with one of us in sight (preferably talking to him).

He will NOT stay asleep during the day for any length of time;

unless he is in his swing - with the vacuum being turned off and on to keep him asleep -

or is being held and jiggled every time he starts to rouse.

Occasionally, he would run around with his teammates,

it was a rough go for mommy after delivery,

so it was quite a while before I got to properly meet you.

But don't worry, Daddy was pretty quick to come over to see you and to talk to you for the very 1st time.

Counting our blessings:

On the way home, Patrick noticed that the Merc was much louder than normal and was pulling badly to the left. Over the next few miles, it continued to get worse. We pulled over to check the tires, suspecting a flat, but all appeared to be normal. We continued 1 more exit before deciding that it was NOT safe to go any further.

To make a long story short, the next morning the tow guy arrived to tow the Merc back to the shop. He drove it briefly and then informed us that there was nothing wrong with it other than a nail in one tire and only 2 lug nuts on another (supposed to have 5). YIKES!!!!

Blessing #1. The truck is not in need of another expensive repair.

Blessing #2. We were protected on the road and pulled over before the entire wheel dropped off.

Blessing #3. A knowledgeable tow guy

God is GOOD!!!

Hummingbird feeder

As usual, it seemed to attract mostly females...

this little lady would perch outside my kitchen window on a branch near the ground, making it quite impossible to see her unless one climbed on the counter (the boys) or perched on their tippy toes (me).

To our great surprise, this guy showed up a few weeks ago, and boy, does he have character.

He loves to hang out, peering at me through the window with his little head tilting from side to side.

He is super curious and confident!!!

And he is the KING.

Each morning, I initially find him on top of the feeder, jealously guarding it from any other Hummingbirds who would dare to approach "his feeder".

Between observing me and chasing off his competition, he sure is one busy guy.

With it being incredibly hot this summer, I was not able to attend many meets.

So the one opportunity I had, I made sure to grab a few shots.

BTW, Aidan did an awesome job and walked away from finals with 3 golds (medley relay, butterfly, and freestyle relay), 1 silver (backstroke), and 1 bronze (freestyle)

- definitely a proud parent moment:)

Cleaning out my closet, I came across this Tuxedo and didn't have to look too far for a model.

He was duly impressed and has asked to wear it on several different occasions:)

He was NOT AT ALL impressed and adamantly refuses to wear it;)

Since Aidan was not back from the swim meet, he chose to sleep in the music room next to me.

I always use a yoga/fitness/balance ball to sit on while working at the computer.

To my surprise, he grabbed this ball (just the perfect size for him) and joined me.

TOO cute!

Big bubbies brought him this gift home from Canada.

He couldn't wait for them to arrive.

I love the way he practically sits on the back of Drew's basketball shoes as he squats to control his truck.

(These are his favorite shoes to wear outdoors, because it keeps him from any contact with the grass.)

Where is my baby?

Well, he is STILL my baby, but you know what I mean.

He has grown and matured so much in just the last few months, that I often catch myself glancing his way twice and being surprised that my baby is really becoming a big boy.

And just in time, with his new little brother to arrive before too awfully long.

Also, it seems unreal that he before too awfully long will NO longer be the baby of our household.

We still refer to him as baby and even call him baby sometimes to which he readily responds - guess there are going to be some pretty big changes over the next few months.

Luke and I will occasionally stay home together while the big boys are out doing "big boy" things.

Punch balloons - you might near ear plugs for this one;)

Homemade play-doh in the color of your choice.

Shark, tiger, a horse, a man....

This recipe is the bomb

(it last forever, and has an amazing texture):

Food coloring

1 cup flour

1 T oil

1 cup water

1/2 cup salt

2 tsp. cream of tarter

Cook on stove top until right form.

If you are making one color, the easiest way is to put the food coloring directly into the batch as you cook it.

However, in my case I was making a host of colors:

I made three batches

(at one time... you might want an assistant... this is a major workout),

divided it into 5 sections, placing each of these on parchment paper,

added the dye and then used the parchment paper to knead the color into the dough.

Not foolproof, but one can manage to remain mostly dye-free:)

On a side note, a day like this is guaranteed to produce happy boys and boys who will sleep well come nightfall:)

Square Foot Gardening

Aidan and I are decided to try our hands at gardening (since his older brothers are spending the summer with their grandparents in Canada).

It started with a trip to the library. We found a few books and brought them home to browse.

And then my friend suggested this book by Mel Bartholomew:

ALL NEW SQUARE FOOT GARDENING

I knew instantly that this was a match.

We created a supply list, chose our vegetables, and plotted the layout - it was a lot of work, but also FUN!!!

I think as the garden begins to produce,

we are going to be so happy we chose this as our spring/summer/fall project.

(2x6 boards cut in 4' lengths = 4x4 box)

Well, they are supposed to be combining the mixture of vermiculite, peat moss, and compost.

This is the way to do it;)

Bets, bragging, ragging... you get the idea...

is all part of the FUN!

(I need some guy help here - can't think of the terminology they use)

Luke really is a lot smaller than everyone else - don't worry, he is not left out!

A short story:

Earlier in the season, Luke built up the courage to sled down the hill by himself...

What a surprise after his initial refusal to sled at all!

At first, he would steal a ride with his daddy, but occasionally Patrick would go alone. After one such solo ride, he turned around to trudge back up the hill only to see Luke flying towards him. Being at the bottom, he was easily able to stop Luke before he plowed into the briars/ditch :)

This continued for quite a while when "bubbies" requested to take a turn.

Hmmmmmm, what appeared to be a fine idea, in reality, turned out to be much harder to execute...

Luke came flying down (he is quite light;)...

Drew sidestepped...

Sean missed...

and Luke sailed into the briars.

Thereafter, he was not nearly as brave, and his "sledding" became quite interesting;)

New bedding - January '11

Way back when Sean and Drew's ages were respectively 3 and 2, I had grand plans to design them a cute boys room.

Unfortunately, it never happened. We had collected a lot of the sheets sets over time (at least 4 or more), but only 2 denim comforters (which 10 years later were looking rather shabby).

And each winter always found us scrounging around for ways to keep everyone warm (especially when company arrived).

Well for Christmas, Granddad and Nana purchased them each a duvet cover and sham of their choosing. I had them all browsing the PT Kids catalog at first, but the older boys informed that they were much too old for these patterns. Instead, they picked from PT Teen,

while the 2 younger boys stuck with PT Kids.

What do you think of their final selections?

Now the boys are plenty warm (Pacific Coast medium-warmth Pyrenees down via Costco online), and we have warm blankets available for guests too:)

I promise he loves his "new bed" and even slept in it a couple of times,

BUT he is going through a stage where he wants to be with Mommy and Daddy for the night.

"I stared, I stared, I stared!!!" he states in his own childish lisp.

So once again a "new bed" was set up for him at the foot of our bed.

He is near us, but no longer sleeping between us every night - PROGRESS!!!!

We are slowly but surely working on him to be prepared for a move back to his bigger boy bed before his new baby brother arrives:)

I think this was taken at about the halfway point of their 11-12 mile ride.

At first Patrick was worried that they had bitten off more than they could chew.

Apparently not, as they are hoping to go for an even longer ride today:)

Considering they are swimming, biking, and part of the local homeschool track team, they are hoping to do a kids' triathalon in the next few months:)

It was bittersweet... on the one hand I would miss the ocean and especially having Patrick all to myself; but at the same, I was missing our boys and so ready to see them, to hug and kiss them, and to hear all about their exciting adventures while we were gone....

While sitting in the shade, watching Patrick learn all about his gear and diving, this was my view of the beach. Is was quite breathtaking and alluring what with the line of sight so small!

Little did he realize that after the 3 hour class he was completely on his own - trying to remember all of the instructions and to assemble his equipment properly - talk about nerve wracking!!!

If you look very carefully, you might see a speck almost dead center, on the edge of the horizon.

This is when I first spotted him, and it still took 10 -15 minutes for him to arrive.

Success!!!

They did return with my darling man (one of the beach attendants assured me that the boat would not have returned unless everyone was on board)

He LOVED it!

Each December, we have established a tradition of "Daddy dates" - Patrick takes each individual boy to the restaurant of their choice, followed by a shopping trip to pick out a gift for their brothers.

Included in this tradition, on Christmas Eve each boy is permitted to pick one gift to open from one of their brothers.

They always have so much fun giving and receiving from one another.

Gifts are chosen and here they are ready to open

Just want to include a funny story from earlier in the evening:

As I was finishing some last minute wrapping in my bedroom, Luke came looking for me. When he found me in the room with the locked door, he was NOT happy. He promptly started crying and kicking the door begging me to open it. He claimed that he would "not look" (yeah, right) and "not tell Bubbies" (what is there to tell if one is not even looking? Besides, earlier in the day while I was helping him wrap his gifts for his brothers, they came to door and I quickly said, "Don't open the door!" He said, "I'm not. He then proceeded to announce through the door that he was wrapping their candy:). Of course, I calmly talked to him through the door while I kept right on wrapping. After a moment, I heard him sob, "Mommy, touch my fingers. Mommy, hold my hand!" I looked over at the door to discover his litttle hand shoved as far under the door as he could get it. I crawled over, touched his hand, stroked his fingers and then shoved my hand as far under as I could get it, so that he could see my fingers.

What a dramatic little guy!

Saturday morning we all hung out at the hotel during the morning and afternoon.

All of the early mornings/late nights and especially jetlag for our family from Japan finally caught up with everyone. Chris took the kids swimming, while I cared for Kaylie (she slept practically the entire time) since Satomi wasn't feeling well.

Public opening - Eva Stubbs: The Rough Ideal

What a spectacular evening!

I could hardly wait to see her work in real life, and it did NOT dissappoint!

Three times, I slowly walked through the gallery viewing both her stunning sculptures and incredible drawings. Each time, I saw something I had previously missed; or revisited a piece that struck me in such a completely different manner, it was almost like seeing it again for the first time.

All I can say is that I really wish each and everyone of you could have the same opportunity.

I have not blogged for several days, because I wanted so badly to photograph and share my favorites with you. However, until I receive her permission, I have decided against it at the present moment.

This year we spent Thanksgiving with my parents in GA!!!

We had a wonderful, relaxing visit - good food, board games, ping-pong, horse riding, walks in the park, interesting conversations, and Mom and I even did a little Black Friday shopping (interesting 1st time experience).

I cannot begin to express the joy Luke has brought to our family. Just today, Aidan (who is assigned to play with Luke while I assist the older boys with their schoolwork) rushed into my room exclaiming, "Mommy, I am having so much fun.... We are very privileged to have my sister's little girl here with us for 3 days, and we are making the best of our time together.

So far we have gone out to eat at both Wendy's and then Dairy Queen for dessert, played soccer while waiting for the boys' to finish soccer practice, gone to a birthday party at the bowling alley (both Charis and Luke giggled when the ball knocked down the pins - great fun:), ........

Lobster, that is!

Why, oh why, did we not do this sooner?

Just 5 min. from the house, live lobster sells for only $6.99 a lb,

and only $7.99 a lb fully cooked and cut open, served with butter, plates, utensils, fresh water, and soap/water/paper towels to clean up with afterwards.

Easy and DELICIOUS!!!!
(I thought it was pretty funny that there was a porta potty right beside our table, but at least we were in the shade.)

Later, we all ate dinner at Shaw's Landing in West Dover.

Patrick and I both think this particular restaurant wins 1st place for their Lobster Roll.

Just days before leaving, we all met up at the the Waeg for lunch.

Afterwards, we all headed in different directions - swimming, home, beach, playground.

Luke has only ever been a pool a couple times in his life.

I was super impressed that while he was nervous, he did quite well going in this pool with me.

My fish loved being back in the water.

Just look at that huge, adorable grin behind his bottle!!!

I kind of forced him to let me do it, and doesn't he look too CUTE!!!

(ALL of my boys have hated having their faces painted - they think it is embarrassing to say the least).

SAILING

The 3 older boys had an extra special opportunity to take two weeks of sailing classes while in Nova Scotia (this is still the highlight of their entire vacation:)

The water was a mere 15*C (brrrrrrr, 59*F)

Aidan spent a lot of time the first week whipping around in this speedboat....

On his very first day, Drew and Aidan were "treated" to a ride on a 420 by a more experienced sailor. As it happens quite frequently, the boat flipped. Drew was able to leap clear, however, Aidan ended up under the boat. I asked him why he didn't just dive down and swim out... he tried, but his life jacket prevented him from diving deep enough. Eventually, he saw a crack and swam for it. Needless to say, it scared him to death and it took him a few days to recover his nerve.

Wow, my baby is 3.

I guess he is not really a baby anymore, but he will always be MY baby.

He continues to bring so much joy into our lives.

Since "boys" were in sailing class, Mommy, Daddy, and Luke, and Nana and Grandad spent some special time alone with the birthday boy.

First, we met up in town for lunch at the Wag.

Luke chose grilled chicken and fries for his lunch, but also snitched a bit of Daddy's chicken club sandwich;)

He then finished off his lunch with a slice of Irish Cream cheesecake.

He LOVED it and polished off the whole dessert with little help from anyone else.

What a silly boy.

Just the 3 of us continued on to Theodore the Tugboat -

Luke was sooooo excited:)

What a sweet (tired) boy.

He wanted his daddy to hold him pretty much the entire time...

But was willing to stand alone for a few minutes inside the boat.

Finally, Mommy got a chance to hold him -

He was cracking us up blowing raspberries the entire time we tried to get a shot.

We arrived back home just in time for hotdogs (Luke's choice) and birthday cake (also his selection - he chose one with both chocolate and vanilla cake baked in a checkered pattern).

Blowing out his candles as we sang Happy Birthday.

We sang this to him several times throughout the day, as he would keep singing it to himself.

Patrick and I booked a getaway for just the 2 of us, thanks to his parents willingness to look after our 4 boys.

It was WONDERFUL!!!

The sliding door was OPEN any time we were in our room, so that we could hear the waves crash and retreat.

Room service -

Patrick chose a bagel with smoked salmon, capers...

And I chose Acadian French toast with well-cooked bacon.

At times, it was VERY foggy (total pea soup).

You can see the tiniest hint of it in the picture.

Didn't really get any great shots of the fireworks, but here you can see how they shot them off over the water. There were people on shore and also offshore in their sailboats enjoying the beautiful display.
